We’re not going to try to fool you and tell you that you should go watch Utah play its first-ever Pac-12 home opener because you’re going to see a great basketball team. The phrase “worst team ever” has been tossed around when discussing this edition of the Runnin’ Utes, and their Rating Percentage Index ranking has been in the 300 and there are only 344 Division I basketball teams. Still, there are four reasons to go watch the team this winter.
Schadenfreude: You’re a BYU fan who enjoys watching the suffering of others that comes as a consequence of violating the Word of Wisdom or hiring Jim Boylen.
The Conference of Champions Reason: Utah is now in the conference that has more NCAA championships than any other-16 in all, including Utah in 1944.
The Gutty Little Utes Theory: In your heart of hearts, you believe that on some night, the guys in red and white will hustle and grind their way to 40 minutes of quality basketball and knock somebody off. Being there will be a joyous occasion.
“I’m Not a Bandwagoner”: Utah has too much hoops tradition to not come out of this funk in coming years. Larry Krystkowiak arrived this past summer to a roster that looks like it was stocked by Old Mother Hubbard, but just like another coach with an unpronounceable last name that starts with “K,” he’ll restore the program to its rightful heritage. When he does, you’ll be one of the tens of dozens of people who can say they were there from the beginning. (Geoff Griffin)
