City Weekly reader Dave Klemm has zeroed in on good Main Street sandwiches. He writes: I wonder if you have ever tried the sammies at Duffy’s Tavern (932 S. Main, 801-355-6401)? They make great sandwiches with just a small pizza-type oven. Try their Reuben or turkey club (it is huge). And, if you go, make sure it is during the week, preferably Tuesday through Friday when Angie is working (she is a treat as well).

Susan Kruithof, production manager at City Weekly, isn’t quite finished singing the praises of Lucky 13. She says: “I realize we pimped them in the Best of Utah, and I am aware that they also got a shout out on Fox 13 for their win. But, I just cannot say enough about the Lucky 13 (135 W. 1300 South, 801-487-4418) food, especially the burgers. I’ve had three burgers there in the last two weeks—this from a girl who normally eats three hamburgers in a year. All thoughts of the size of my ass went out the door when I took my first bite of the Big Benny, made with bacon—glorious bacon, smoked on the premises—ham, and really good hamburger. I later tried the Ring of Fire burger: Roasted habaneros, jalapenos, and pureed habanero sauce. My scalp was sweaty after that one. Not just ridiculously hot, but ridiculously delicious! Even their house salads are nothing to thumb your nose at: Real fresh salad greens, no iceberg within miles of my salad.”

Last year we shared City Weekly reporter Eric Peterson’s budget pork chop recipe with readers. It was so popular we decided to trot it out one more time! Why, he even suggests beverage pairings. Eric writes: “Here’s a fun recipe for anybody on a tight budget. Buy a package of good Kroger brand pork chops and fry them in a pan. Then, fry an egg on top of each pork chop as best you can (I sometimes find that the eggs slide off so it may help to build a kind of pork chop structure, like a corral or crib if you will, to keep the eggs from slipping off of the chops). When the whole mess has finished cooking, place on a plate and smother in BBQ sauce. This bargain dish pairs well with cheap Scotch and flat club soda.”
