“Practice what you preach” is passé advice usually doled out by those who don’t do so, though there are some exceptions. Preaching with a compassionate humanitarianism and mission-driven activism, Dr. James Orbinski indeed practices what he advocates. He practiced as a physician with, and was later president of, Doctors Without Borders.

At his lecture today, Orbinski will describe his experiences in countries like Somalia and Rwanda, addressing questions about human pain and illness around the globe. The day before the lecture, April 5, a documentary about Orbinski’s work, Triage, will be screened at the Salt Lake City Main Library Auditorium. The film shows firsthand the consequences of civil war, genocide, and abject poverty.

Seeking to ignite our hearts and minds to the plight of people suffering from indifference and neglect in intolerable circumstances, Orbinski hopes to ensure our preaching is more than just empty words.
