Downtown on a Collision Course

I’ve lived in Utah for almost 22 years now, five of which have been spent living in downtown Salt Lake City, and I know that some things never change. It’s been almost six months since City Creek Center opened on Main Street downtown. The area surrounding it is very dirty, blighted, dark and empty. City streets, roads, sidewalks, streetlights, traffic lights, etc. aren’t being fixed or maintained properly.

With the slightest downpour of rain, the street in front of my apartment building on 300 East floods due to inadequate storm drainages. Mayor Becker and the City Council extending parking enforcement from 6 to 8 p.m. on weekdays is ridiculous, not to mention the fact that UTA wants to curb the free fare zone downtown.

Downtown Salt Lake City has been on a collision course, to the point of no return. It sold itself out years ago. I wish that Mayor Becker would do a better job of making this place more inviting. The bar, club, restaurant scene is weak. Is it any wonder why downtown Salt Lake City is on the brink of losing the Outdoor Retailer show? Anyone surprised?
