Hill is about “More for Less” doing more projects with less people. Management will target older, experienced workers and replace them with younger, cheaper labor. I’d like to see managers do more than yell at us or find lame excuses to write us up on, but actually lend a hand with the workload. Instead we get criticized for everything and praised for nothing. Leadership in my group is all about paranoia. It’s toxic. Coots is familiar with the military way; high level training, rewards for going above and beyond, support from management and coworkers. It’s called Esprit de corps. The military team you’re in may be the team you go to war with. Contrasted to the civilian way, where the base is run like Walmart. No support, no sincere team building and no rewards. Instead, you see people in high places promoting their family members and friends, which you then must train and support b/c they don’t know what they’re doing. When you complain about the unethical practices, from sexual harassment to abuses of management, nothing happens. When I completed my eight assigned tasks, and volunteer for more work, I get a write-up that I can’t finish my last task, while my coworker, who takes on one workload, milks it, receives a higher appraisal. The message that base leadership sends us is, if you feel victimized, it’s your fault, from accidents to harassment. Nobody that I know of will go to EEO or the IG. The impression is, they do less than nothing.
I’ve known people who were promoted b/c they don’t know how to do the job they were hired for, but they get paid more for checking time sheets and attending meetings? Why not hold these managers accountable for poor morale, lack of training, lack of support, waste of project funds? My manager seems clueless all the time, maybe he’s on medication? It’s frustrating to point out Air Force and government directives that apply to us, and hear, “well, we’re going in a new direction and if you keep bringing that up, you need to find someplace else to work” from our leadership. If you pencil-whip enough, you can speedily meet project deadlines. The VA management figured this out awhile ago. I’m sure those VA managers were promoted for figuring out a way of cooking the books. Just backdate the vets appointment time by 30 days. Problem solved. Sure, there were whistle-blowers and complaints over a 6 year period, to the IG, and nothing was done and vets died waiting for care. It’s about More for Less.
CW always provides those behind the scene stories. Almost nobody knows or cares about Russian Olives, Tumble weeds or Tamarisk. All imported weeds. Adding more bio-control seems to amplify the problems that already exist. As for the Flycatcher, dw sums it up, they'll nest in the Willows. I'd be curious to know, can Tamarisk be used for biofuels?
This all sounds like a Bureaucratic merry go round. Tamarisk reduces erosion, but is a nasty tree, introduce beetles to kill trees, which results in fire hazards and threatening a birds nesting area. Both trees and bugs spread at an alarming rate (as did tumbleweeds, which mandatorily appear in all westerns) What "bugs" me about this article is that the beetles were released w/o the public having a say in it. What else is going on that the residents of St. George/Moab are unaware of?
This reminds me of Okinawa, once infested with rats, the Habu (a viper) was introduced. Instead of eating rats, they ate the birds and threatened people(seriously, this snake chases people). So the Mongoose were introduced. So now the island has rats, deadly snakes and mongoose and a diminishing bird population. The same happened on Guam, which had trees full of beautiful birds, now there's hardly a bird to be seen. This Bio-control method is a proven failure and should be halted, opening another Pandora's box isn't going to close the first one or the second or the third.
