Dinner @ The Savory Palate
The Savory Palate restaurant is a “laboratory” eatery in Draper at the Art Institute of Salt Lake City, where student chefs, servers and managers can get first-hand experience in operating a restaurant. The Savory Palate is open to the public and now offers dinner service on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. According to Art Institute Chef Katie Weinner, “Each evening, we will offer upscale, contemporary cuisine from all over the world. The price per person is $17.95 for six courses, with unique surprises along the way. Diners are able to watch the students prepare the meal through the glass window separating guests from the main kitchen.” Sample menu items include duck confit tacos, pumpkin gnocchi with crisp pork belly and peanut-milk froth, roasted tomato soup with olive charcoal crouton and pickled onions and grilled Romaine Caesar salad. Reservations are strongly suggested for this 40-seat eatery, and can be made by calling 801-601-4769.

World Wines @ Westminster
Westminster College’s Continuing Education Program is offering its “Wine 101 Series: Wines of the World,” an opportunity to taste and learn about wines. Each class in the series, taught by Eric Nielsen, is $50. Upcoming topics include food pairings and tasting of wines from Oregon, Washington, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. For further registration information, visit WestminsterCollege.edu.

Black Bear Sighted in Sandy
The original Black Bear Diner—featuring home-style comfort food and large portions—originally opened in Mt. Shasta, Calif., in 1995. Now, Black Bear has come to Utah, with a newly opened location in Sandy at 1966 E. 9400 South. “Since opening our first diner in Mt. Shasta, Bob [co-founder Manley] and I have been committed to offering wholesome, honest food just like Grandma used to make for Sunday dinner,” said co-founder Bruce Dean. Black Bear Diner features menu items such as mealoaf, pot roast, fried chicken, burgers, sandwiches, salads, corned beef hash and my favorite: Portuguese linguiça and eggs for breakfast. For more information, phone 801-571-7026 or visit BlackBearDiner.com.
