David Mack’s profile in comics has become more visible over the years, largely thanks to stints on Daredevil, Alias and New Avengers—usually alongside longtime friend and Marvel’s (arguably) most popular writer, Brian Michael Bendis. What most people don’t know is that Mack was making comics long before working on those titles, and his creatorowned, Eisner Award-winning series Kabuki has been around since 1994.

Kabuki, which Mack writes and illustrates, is about a Japanese assassin, only not in the way one would expect. Instead of fast-paced action, much of Kabuki is character study, focusing on memories, emotions and other aspects of the mind. Mack’s art has a beautiful, dreamlike quality and, often, it uses unconventional techniques to move the story.

Select pieces from Mack’s career have been on display at the Main Library for nearly a month, and the man himself will be in town to discuss it and provide a small demonstration.

David Mack @ Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, 801-524-8200, Saturday, Dec. 5, 2–3 p.m.
