Dave & Cranky Chuckie’s American Bistro has been in business for only about seven and a half months, but its original menu and chic décor make it one of the best-kept secrets in Utah County dining.
Owned by brothers David and Charles Furse, Dave & Cranky Chuckie’s sports an interior that emits a modern yet classy urban vibe. Dividing the entrance and the main dining room is a stone fireplace, and drinks are served in tall, thin glasses that look suspiciously like flower vases.
The two brothers started the business after being encouraged by their mother. Charles—affectionately called “Chuckie”—has been cooking for nearly 10 of his 25 years, and works as head chef. David, three years Charles’ senior, graduated from BYU with a degree in recreation management and handles the business side of things, though he can also be spotted working among the waiters.
Dave & Cranky Chuckie’s offers a wide range of appetizers, salads, soups, entrees and desserts. The nachos are stacked just shy of 10 inches high, with corn, peppers, onions, tomatoes and pineapple cascading down the rivers of nacho cheese.
One of the signature entrees is the sun-dried-tomato chicken, with grilled vegetables and scalloped potatoes. The chicken is moist and finely seasoned. And the dish is worth ordering for the scalloped potatoes alone. Soft without being soggy, fried without being stiff, they find the perfect balance between those two extremes.
If customers are in the mood for something sweet, the chocolate lava cake is to die for. Drenched in crème anglaise and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the chocolate lava cake tastes even better than it looks. The warm chocolate cake and the cold vanilla ice cream blend so beautifully, it practically melts in your mouth.
