Dan Barker might have, as he says, “grown up” from believing in God, Jesus or the Bible, but he can’t leave the pulpit behind. The former traveling evangelical preacher and Christian musician—most notably of the musical Mary Had A Little Lamb—of 19 years announced his atheism in 1984. He’s been talking about it publicly ever since.

In his first book, 1992’s Losing Faith in Faith, the 61-year-old de-convert writes, “The longer I have been an atheist, the more amazed I am that I ever believed Christian notions.” Currently, Barker furthers his beliefs weekly in an hour-long Freethought Radio broadcast for Air America—however, with less evangelical fervor than before. He now preaches the merits of a true separation of church and state and freedom from faith. In a lecture organized by SHIFT—a student group dedicated to secular humanism, inquiry and free thought—Barker lectures interested minds with the latter; a book signing follows.

Dan Barker @ University of Utah, Orson Spencer Hall Auditorium, 260 S. Central Campus Drive, Nov. 6, free. 7:30 p.m.
