The arrival of winter’s bone-chilling cold is making people curse everything holy when scraping ice from their car windows in the morning. But, for many low-income people, especially the homeless, the cold means more than a few minutes of suffering. So, as the cold’s grip tightens, consider why now might be a good time to donate warm clothing to help protect others through winter.

Crossroads Urban Center Thrift Store
Ongoing
The Crossroads Urban Center is an anchor of support for Salt Lake City’s low-income and homeless people for decades. Need knows no season, and institutions of charity are always dependent on the generosity of others. To help, shop the thrift store and donate any extra winter clothing. The center is especially in need of men’s work clothes and the basics, especially new socks and underwear, as well as pots, pans, dish towels and bedding.

One Warm Coat
Nov. 27-Dec. 31
As part of the One Warm Coat project, Dexterity Salon is asking for winter coats to help the needy. Dexterity is participating in the national coat drive that One Warm Coat started in 1992 in San Francisco. They’ve since spread their model for organizing clothing drives nationwide and have delivered more than 1 million winter coats to the less fortunate. This winter, help the organization get closer to that second million while also helping Salt Lake’s homeless families.
Dexterity Salon, 777 E. 300 South, Nov. 27-Dec. 31, 801-364-1420. DexteritySalon.com.

Community Coat Exchange
Friday Nov. 27
Instead of focusing on consumption on Black Friday, think about giving. A group of nonprofits, low-income charities and schools will be hosting a winter-clothing drive on the day after Thanksgiving. Donate at any of multiple drop-off centers, including four in Salt Lake City.
Nov. 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Visit CoatExchange.org for all of the drop-off locations.
