Country Pride Truck Stop, Historic Benson Grist Mill & Taste of the Nation

On your way to or from Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, you might want to stop at the T & A Salt Lake Travel Center truck stop for a meal at the Country Pride restaurant. It serves honest, down-to-earth truck stop fare like its lip-smacking liver and onions with mashed potatoes and gravy for a measly $5.99. It’s the perfect place for a pre- or post-race meal, and chances are good that somebody at Country Pride is going to call you “hon.”

Another interesting stop going to or from Miller Motorsports Park is the Historic Benson Grist Mill in Stansbury Park. In 1854, LDS apostle Ezra Taft Benson arrived in the Tooele Valley with orders from church President Brigham Young to construct a gristmill that would serve new pioneer settlements in the area. From 1854 to the 1940s, the Benson mill processed wheat and corn by the ton. The last bag of flour was ground in the 1940s, and the structure fell into disrepair until 1983 when a group of volunteers began restoring the mill one piece at a time, including a granary and dairy barn. Today, you can visit the Historic Benson Grist Mill from May 1 through Oct. 31, Monday through Saturday. 325 State Road 138, Stansbury Park, 435-882-7678, BensonMill.org.

At the very successful Taste of the Nation last week, a total of over $100,000 was raised to help fight hunger in our communities. I got to play auctioneer and wanted to express special thanks to the generous restaurateurs and chefs who donated their services as auction items: Mikel Trapp of Trio Café and Fresco; Dave Jones from Bambara restaurant and the Hotel Monaco; Snowbird Resort and Cliff Lodge; and Zane Holmquist of Stein Eriksen Lodge. You guys rock!

Quote of the week: That’s one impressive sausage! —Colosimo’s T-shirt
