CORKY SIEGEL’S CHAMBER BLUES

There really aren’t enough bands attempting to meld traditional chamber music with kick-ass blues. Good thing Corky Siegel is picking up the slack. The famed blues harmonica player, pianist, composer and former member of the Siegel-Schwall Band, (which toured extensively throughout the ’60s and ’70s) is currently touring with seven other ace musicians expressing an off-beat blend of Willie Dixon and the New York Philharmonic. According to Siegel, the chance meeting of two genres is fate in stereo. LIVE WIRE

Whatever happened to The Street, those local metal sweethearts and onetime City Weekly Showdown alumni whose raging slab of a band seemed ripe for mainstream success? They’ve regrouped as Live Wire, a Motley Crüe tribute to trump all tributes, shouting at the devil with the force of a thousand street preachers. Other local acts will try and dethrone these lovers of girls, girls, girls, but they don’t know that Tommy Lee blessed Live Wire with secret powers of persuasion. Groupies are already lining up. Tonight kicks off the band’s regular gig as part of Motley Fridays (first Friday of every month). THE OZZMENZ

Anyone who goes out of his way to track down a wig fashioned after Ozzy Osbourne’s imperfect coif isn’t covering “Paranoid” in jest. The Ozzmenz is a local Ozzy/Black Sabbath tribute completely serious about classic metal—and resolved to kick Live Wire’s motley crew. Rik Spydell (John “Donny” Osbourne), Jeff Nelson (Zach E. Rhodes), Richard Bettison (Bob Geezarzo) and Gordon Gardner (Tommy Castillo), have been honing their chops for over 20 years and plan on rocking out for at least two decades more. You might feel sorry for a group that specializes in someone else’s genius, but when said artist has turned into a parody himself, staying true to original intent seems much more admirable. VIRGIL CANE

When Butch Boswell mined The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” to title his latest project, Virgil Cane, he snagged himself a way to remember all the key influences driving the group’s homegrown sound. Boswell, formerly of alt-country outfit Muses, has since kept his sound firmly rooted in tradition. The singer-songwriter, along with longtime collaborator Adam Farber and drummer Brian Monzel, are Americana dreamers blossoming in California. On Stereo Fields, Boswell’s chameleon vocals conjure equal parts Jackson Browne and Sonny Landreth—perfect for those long train rides to wherever home is now. Muse Music, 149 N. And now for something completely kosher: a little bit of Hasidic reggae beatboxing from my man Matisyahu. OK, he’s not really my man, but what a hook, huh? The 24-year-old Orthodox-Jewish-musician is none other than former Phish-head Mathew Miller, a New York New School kid who ditched Buddha-bud for pure enlightenment. You see, he didn’t want to end up like Jim Morrison, wasting away in some chic Paris cemetery. So he grew out his beard and peyos, donned a black hat and took spirituality to the mic. Matisyahu comes correct on Shake Off the Dust … Arise, a debut streaming high hopes—Bob Marley meets Shlomo Carlebach. Wow, excuse me while I light my spliff … er, read the Torah. GUTTERMOUTH

This Mother’s Day, please refrain from sending that special woman in your life a copy of Guttermouth’s “Mom,” a witty, albeit wholly offensive, ode to familial relationships built on disgust. Don’t, however, disregard these Huntington Beach, Calif., musicians as completely useless jerk-offs. Sure, their lyrics are decidedly un-PC, but if you can laugh at yourself you might just as easily laugh at others. The group is currently touring in support of Eat Your Face, an album promising more blue-collar punk from some of the scene’s most enduring crude boys. TIFT MERRITT, TRES CHICAS

Contrary to popular belief, Tres Chicas is not a progressive Mariachi band defying traditional machismo. This is three of North Carolina’s finest female recording artists sidelining critically acclaimed solo gigs and day jobs for one powerhouse project. Those still sore over the demise of long-defunct Whiskeytown will be especially pleased to see the alt-country group’s former siren Caitlin Cary on board, along with Hazeldine’s Tonya Lamm and Glory Fountain’s Lynn Blakely.
