The summer activist needs to rest his or her feet from all the 5K awareness walks every now and then, and what better place to take a load off than in well air-conditioned government meeting rooms? This week, take a look at how the Salt Lake City Civilian Review Board polices the police. Later, you can hit the Hill and check up on a legislative committee review of the liquor agency’s behavior before swinging by a redistricting meeting to speak up on the redistricting process that will soon map your political boundaries—with or without your input.

Police Civilian Review Board
Thursday, July 14

Civilian review boards for police agencies give Joe Citizen an independent review of allegations of police misconduct. While the board can’t directly discipline sloppy cops or bruisers in cruisers, it can make recommendations to the chief. This week, the board will review new accusations and approve the board’s quarterly report. If you have something you’d like the board to investigate, phone 801-535-7230.

Business and Labor Interim Committee
Wednesday, July 20

In the legislative off-season, lawmakers will weigh the efficiency of Utah’s booze biz in different ways at this week’s meeting. Committee members will first evaluate the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s handling of a $300,000 loss from one of its packaging agencies. Then, liquor-license renewal fees for restaurants will be discussed, which, if hiked, could hurt local businesses.

Redistricting Committee
Wednesday, July 20

Once every decade, Utah citizens get the chance to fight for their political voting districts to be shaped to match their communities. After the Redistricting Committee stops taking public comment in the fall, it will start drawing maps that affect your vote and political destiny. Speak now, or hold your peace until 2021.
