It is never, ever too late to discover your artistic soul. Cindy McConkie would tell you so herself.

She’s lived it. Life as a wife and mother provided a slight detour for McConkie, who decided at the age of 37—just as her youngest child was beginning kindergarten, and after a back injury prevented her from engaging in her other favorite pastime, running—that maybe she’d like to go back to school and study art. With the family’s Olympus OM1 camera, McConkie began exploring photography and the play of light on objects. Her current exhibit finds her taking close-ups of the familiar, and using exposure and light to render them completely unrecognizable. See the world in a new way through her eyes.

Cindy McConkie: Self-Focused Abstractions @ Main Library, Level 4, 210 E. 400 South, 801-524-8200, April 18–May 30. Artist reception Saturday, April 18, 4–5:30 p.m. SLCPL.org
