No Lunch For You

Also: TV Time, Zoned Out

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Feb 5,2014 - Agreed, don’t blame the hapless lunch ladies. You know, the weeping women who wrenched trays of food from unsuspecting children at Uintah Elementary. Yeah, it likely wasn’t their fault that Salt Lake School District was operating on some backward policy that allowed kids to go through a lunch line only to discover that their parents hadn’t paid their bills.

POSTED // Jan 29,2014 - Rocky Mountain Power must not be making enough money. And those annoying solar panels and wind turbines, well, they’re just leeching profits from the power company. Pointless Polls

Also: Welcome, World; Come Together

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Jan 22,2014 - Sunday must be poll day for Salt Lake City newspapers. Yes, everyone wants to know what everyone else thinks about things, but surely there’s a point at which opinion doesn’t matter.

POSTED // Jan 15,2014 - There’s something about digging in old terra firma. Turns out it’s not all that firm. Kennecott—the largest open-pit copper mine in the world—played host in 2013 to a huge landslide that could have buried Central Park 60 times.

POSTED // Jan 8,2014 - This whole same-sex marriage thing has got us thinking differently. Watching “former sheriff” Richard Mack (yes, he was referred to that way three times) on Fox News excoriate the “homosexual agenda” (no, he didn’t like to use the word “gay”) was both funny and embarrassing.

Magic Millions

Also: Ignore the Issues, Parenting Parents.

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Dec 31,2013 - Big news. Really big news, and it’s not that gay marriage can happen in Utah. No, it’s that the Utah Legislature can find you $2 million if it wants to.

Marriage Mayhem

Also: Polluted Politics, Herbert Vs. Health Care.

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Dec 24,2013 - People are very, very mad; people are very, very happy. And it’s all about gay marriage, come to Utah by way of what the governor calls judicial activism.

Polyga-partners

Also: Small Business Strife, Good News, Bad News.

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Dec 18,2013 - Is it all about sodomy? Choice? Abuse? While the polygamous community celebrates Judge Clark Waddoups’ ruling that gives the green light to multiple-wife households, everyone else is trying to figure out what it means in the real world.

Can't We All Get Along?

Also: Snow Trouble At All, Witnessing Is Not a Crime.

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Dec 11,2013 - You have to give Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams an A for effort, but solving a 30-year-old problem could require some divine intervention.

Hits & Misses

Happy Thanksgiving?

Also: Water Woes, Solar Flair

By Katharine Biele
POSTED // Dec 4,2013 - Wasn’t it so thoughtful of those LDS missionaries at the Missionary Training Center to make 350,000 meals for hungry children? And surely there were others—Pamela Atkinson, the Salvation Army and so on—who also made this one day of the whole year a time to, well, eat.
