This weekend is bursting with opportunities to build bridges with the Earth, the diversity in your own community and local lawmakers. During the weekend, join the Communities of Resistance Teach-In, which will explain the overlap between indigenous wisdom and stewardship of the Earth. On Saturday, you can also check out the Expo Mujer, an event that will offer resources to, and celebrate the role of, Latinas in our community. On Monday, talk to lawmakers about this year’s session at a legislative recap put on by the University of Utah.

Communities of Resistance Teach-In
Saturday-Sunday, March 16 & 17

Progressive causes like the rights of indigenous people and the protection of the Earth are deeply connected. At this event, sponsored by the Deep Green Resistance Great Basin, you can hear directly from native leaders like Goshute Tribal Chairman Ed Naranjo discuss the southern Nevada water pipeline that’s threatening to take groundwater from the reservation. There will also be a film screening, presentations from the Utah Tar Sands Resistance and nonviolent civil- disobedience training from Peaceful Uprising. Suggested donation is $5 to $10. Federation of Mexican Clubs, 344 Goshen St., Salt Lake City, March 16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; March 17, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Facebook.com/DGRGreatBasin

Expo Mujer: Hispanic Women’s Expo

Come celebrate International Women’s Day and the Latina influence in our community at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. Enjoy live music, a fashion show, zumba, prizes, contests and free community resources and information. Utah Cultural Celebration Center, 1355 W. 3100 South, West Valley City, 801-965-5100, March 16, 11 a.m-6 p.m., HispanicMediaServices.com

Legislative Wrap-Up
Monday, March 18

The Legislature may have wrapped up its 2013 general session, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to thank or heckle some of the lawmakers for the bills and issues tackled this session. This free legislative recap at the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics will feature House Speaker Rebecca Lockhart, R-Provo, along with Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck, D-Salt Lake City, and others. Hinckley Caucus Room, Orson Spencer Hall, 260 S. Central Campus Drive, University of Utah, 801-581-8501, March 18, noon-1 p.m., Hinckley.Utah.edu
