You can tell when it’s halftime or a timeout during each of the eight football games on the TVs at Fiddler’s Elbow by watching the line for the Sunday brunch buffet.
There’s a wave of Tampa Bay Buccaneers jerseys one minute, with fans Hail Mary-ing for carved slices of the prime rib. A few minutes later, the New England Patriots contingent queues up for made-to-order omelets. Offsides on the defense: One Broncos fan just cut in line.
This Sugar House sports-centric eatery bustles on game days; it’s the Prime place in Salt Lake City to watch the pros pass the pigskin. Sundays at home with pizza and wings can’t compete with the buffet, Bloody Marys and sports enthusiasts at Fiddler’s Elbow. Upon entering, the hostess asks you which game you’d like to watch (although she can often tell by your apparel) and seats you in that section of the restaurant.
I root for Team Bloody Mary on Sundays, so we sit on the covered patio, close to the buffet. My Mary—a loaded celebration in a glass—is made with Absolut Peppar and has the ideal balance of vitamins, salt and booze to cure what ails many Sunday brunch-goers.
The buffet starts with green, pasta and fruit salads, but I bypass this for the bucket o’ bacon (a piece of which goes in my Bloody Mary). There’s a smoked-salmon plate with capers, onions and cream cheese, as well as serve-yourself sausages, potatoes O’Brien, eggs Benedict, French toast and waffles. There’s an omelet bar, too, but the star of the halftime show is the Prime rib; top it with au jus and horseradish. It’s enough food to get you through your game, a nap and dinnertime.
