Reading In The Shed: The Woodshed
Bars aren’t necessarily known for their impact on the literary world, but many a grand idea for manuscripts has come from patrons bellied up to the bar. The Woodshed (60 E. 800 South) pays respect to authors and readers alike with a book club on Mondays from 5 to 9 p.m. Stop by and pick up a reading list or just sit down to chat. Background sounds delivered by DJ Steve.

Oscars: Downtown Dance in … Midvale?
Though a little farther down State Street from downtown, Oscars (8136 S. State) brings some big-city DJ action to bear on Friday and Saturday nights with DJ Erockalypse and DJ Latu, respectively. Erockalypse shares the bill with $3.50 Skittles shots—taste the drunken rainbow—and $5 mind erasers. Latu is double-billed with some heavy hitters as well: $3.50 Ute Shots and Cherry Bombs. As the dance floor gets increasingly sweaty and salty, step off for a fruit refreshment then hop back into the weekend fray.

Dead Club Rising: Bar X
The briefly closed 200 South historic bar is set to start a bitter rivalry with neighbor Johnny’s on Second as it reopens to the public. And what the old Bar-X (155 E. 200 South) lacked in polish the new owners are making up for with a shinier interior and a classier cocktail selection. You might see investor/actor Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy on ABC’s Modern Family) when you pop in, too.

Sugar House Pub: First Anniversary Expansion
It’s been almost a year since Sugar House Pub (1992 S. 1100 East) opened. It took six months to get a full liquor license, and now even further progress is being made as they prepare to knock down a wall and double their space. The new side is scheduled to open around their first anniversary in March.
