Local Releases: Massacre At The Wake, Matthew Nanes, Emily Brown

We've got three localized album releases to talk about this week, one rock group and two solo efforts to be specific. And after last week's hellstorm, which ended in an email apology from whoever ran their Gmail account, we'll be pressing on with more important matters and get back to what these posts are about. The music! Ironically enough, we'll be starting off with another hard rock band, briefly mention last week, Massacre At The Wake. Formed out of the deaths of Minus One and PostRiot, the hardcore metal group has been around for roughly six years with one 2007 demo (What We Have Done) and a few lineup changes here and there, most recently having to replace their lead singer and landing Jesse Coombs after a lengthy audition. Since taking on Coombs the band have written an entirely new set and have been rocking around town over the past couple years. When we'll get a formal professional release from them, who knows. But for now they've got a live album released just last month called Badgeristic Live Pain In SLC, taken from a recording they did at Club Vegas in early March with DJ Sharp at the board. They didn't do a formal release show for it, but you can pick up the album off their ReverbNation page right now, or the next time you see them at the show.

Moving onto live release shows, tonight you'll find the latest from our old friend Matthew Nanes. That name should sound familiar to many of you as a former member of Gaza, not to mention a frequent Kilby performer in several bands, most notably being the front-man for Swans Of Never. (Which essentially is his project with a band behind him.) But this time he's making an official solo album in the fashion of a self-titled EP. The album is simply Nanes double tracking guitars (with the expert help of Andy Patterson) and raw vocals. Pretty damn good for what its worth, especially being just five tracks, definitely worth checking out. You can catch him tonight at Kilby playing along with Spooky Moon and Mason Jones with hard copies on sale cheap. At least that's the plan, that schedule has been changing a lot. $6 starting at 7PM.

And then this Saturday down at Velour, we'll see the debut release from Emily Brown. ...I truly wish I had more to say about her, but she doesn't really get out a lot beyond Provo. Brown (pictured above; photo by Trevor Christensen) has become a staple of the city's music scene as a member of the eclectic trio Book On Tapeworm, but not many shows to speak of as a solo artist. Which is a shame after hearing her first release,
This Goes With Us, showcasing Brown with no backing accompaniment. Just a girl and her piano making some very sweet music with little post-production. Quite a lovely album. You can catch her tomorrow night for her album release show, performing with Marlee & Hayley and Jennifer Blosil. Just $6 starting at 8PM.
