Tour Diary: Desert Noises (part 1)

by Austen Diamond
- Posted // 2011-07-07 - When touring through Michigan, you might just play a private party for a 2020 presidential campaign—and if it’s a farce, at least there’s the gun-shooting in his basement.

This is the first installment of a periodic feature where locally-based bands write from the road and describe the toils and virtues of the touring life. We have placed no stipulations on content, except asking them to keep it less-than-novel length and asked for their diary entries to come in roughly every week. If you are a local band and what to take part, feel free to contact the me at adiamond@cityweekly.net.

As Provo-based, Northplatte recording artists Desert Noises anxiously anticipates the release of their first full-length album, Mountain Sea, they have hit the road for a month-long summer tour. For more information about the Mountain Sea vinyl release on Slowtrain Records, read this, and for an interview with the band, read this.

The first leg saw them through Colorado, the Midwest and as far north as New York City, eventually landing in Michigan where frontman Kyle Henderson (pictured above) writes from on July 6, 2011:

It's hard to explain the insanity of this first week of tour. We had a day off on our schedule and received a call from Tom Rowland in Pontiac, Mich. about playing his annual 4th of July bash. Tom plans to run for president of the United States in 2020. Every year until then he has a party to announce his intentions.

When we first pulled up to Tom’s house, he was jumping up and down, half-naked, and screaming. He invited us in and took us into his basement to shoot guns. As the day rolled on, Tom prepared his speech and we set up for the show. Around 1 a.m. Tom gave his amazing speech, and we followed by playing the national anthem. People danced, laughed, cried, and someone probably died.

Until next time.
