Concert Review: Sara Bareilles at In the Venue

by Lauren Lombardi
- Posted // 2010-11-18 - In her hit "King of Anything," Sara Bareilles asks, "Who made you king of anything?" Salt Lake City fans definitely made her queen of In the Venue Wednesday night.

Originally Bareilles was supposed to play at the Avalon Theatre, but due to the influx of ticket sales, the show was moved to a larger venue. Even so, the show sold out, and every nook and cranny was filled with fans anxiously awaiting Bareilles' music.

Holly Conlan lured the audience inside with her new single, "Stay," and "You are Goodbye," among others. Following Conlan was Cary Brothers—and yes, "it's just one guy,"as he clarified for the audience. Brothers played "Blue Eyes," "Under Control" from his new album, and "Ride," which some may have heard on the ABC show, Grey's Anatomy.

As crew members arranged Bareilles' royal blue piano, fans anticipated her appearance. She opened with "Vegas," off her previous album, Little Voice, singing "I'm gonna quit my job and move to Utah." Bareilles played a mix of songs from her new album, Kaleidoscope Heart, beginning with "Uncharted," which she explained was the basis of the entire album. She invited Conlan back to the stage to sing background vocals for "Gonna Get Over You" and "Machine Gun."

Next up was "Love Song," the track that gained her mainstream success back in 2007. Bareilles admitted she wrote the song for her record label.

Conlan and Brothers returned to the stage to sing a cover of Radiohead's "Nice Dream" with Bareilles. The trio played a unique intro to the song, with the band in charge of percussion on stage left. After "Let the Rain" and "Bottle it Up" Bareilles sang her most current hit, "King of Anything."

As the lights dimmed, Bareilles moved to her piano to finish up with "Fairytale" and "Gravity." For the encore she returned with "Kaleidoscope Heart" with an accordion, and the venue quieted. The band, Conlan and Brothers returned to help end the concert with "Many the Miles."
