Lounge Act Monday: Jazz, indie-pop and new voices in theater

A couple of fine music options for your Monday night, plus a new bit of theater at Salt Lake Acting Company.---
Monday marks the season finale for the Jazz at the Sheraton series, and you can take that finale part quite literally—the series is moving to the Capitol Theatre for its 2011-12 season. That should be pretty awesome, considering the Capitol is one of the city's true gems. In the meantime, you have a chance for one last throw-down in the Sheraton ballroom that's housed the series for the past few years. And Regina Carter should be quite the show, given how insanely creative the woman is with her violin. For her most recent project, Carter used the cash prize that came with her MacArthur "genius grant" to research West African music, and she then incorporated it into her jazz sound. Here's hoping we get to hear a lot of that music tonight; the show starts at 7:30 p.m.
If you're down in Provo, indie-pop king John Vanderslice is headlining a gig at Velour. Read our interview with Vanderslice here, then hit the road to Utah County. Or, if you're here in Salt Lake City or points north, Vanderslice will also be playing at Kilby Court Tuesday night. Hell, make it a two-fer and hit both shows! Vanderslice is worth it.
For something a wee bit different, consider a trip to Salt Lake Acting Company for the New Play Sounding Series, which tonight features (a man enters), a new piece by local playwright Elaine Jarvik and her daughter Kate Jarvik Birch. Admission is free, and the reading starts at 7 p.m.
