Summer Concerts at Gallivan Center

You might have heard about a few of the shows coming to the Gallivan Center this summer, ranging from Avett Brothers to B.B. King.

This is NOT the return of the Twilight Concert Series—an announcement on where the popular free Thursday night summer shows will be held in 2011 has yet to happen—but United Concerts is delving into the newly remodeled Gallivan Center to bring a concert series to life downtown.

The local promoter plans on putting on about 10 shows; so far,  the announced shows include a free grand opening show featuring Sam Bush on June 9, then paid shows by Toad the Wet Sprocket (July 7), Avett Brothers (July 10), Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (July 16), Amos Lee (Aug. 7) and B.B. King (Aug. 18). Tickets for those shows go on sale this Friday, April 22. Check the United Concerts Web site for details and for future additions to the series.

United's Teresa Mooney said she expects the shows to be limited to about 5,000 people, and there will be drinks and beer sold at the venue. Fans will be able to bring their own food to the shows, which is a nice touch.

Now the question is whether the $8 million Gallivan remodel will be done in time. U92 is planning a Cinco de Mayo car show and concert featuring Cypress Hill on Saturday, May 7. Looking at the progress at Gallivan, conveniently located across the street from the City Weekly office, that's going to be pushing it.
