Lounge Act Monday: Something for the kids

While we recover from that rough-and-tumble Conference Weekend, let's focus on some kid-friendly activities going down Monday.

The always cool Ogden Nature Center is hosting Who's Afraid of the Dark?, during which teacher/naturalist Susan Snyder will discuss myths and fear about the dark and how people, animals and plants adapt to the world of low light. There will be a chance to look at the stars through high-powered telescopes, and take a night walk through the center to see animals in a natural nighttime habitat. The fun starts at 7 p.m.

Here in Salt Lake City, the Samba Fogo Community School is hosting an afterschool workshop at the Utah Arts Alliance starting today in which students can learn Brazilian drumming and dance. The eight-week classes are available for ages 13-18 or for ages 8-12 (the younger set starts on Friday).

The Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City is hosting a showcase by local artist Brian Baity, who hand-carves egg shells ranging from tiny quail eggs to ostrich eggs. Baity was recently invited to showcase his work in Bulgaria over the Easter holiday, but you and the kids can check out his stuff for free all week.

For grownups looking for some entertainment tonight, consider the Asking Alexandria show at The Complex, Captain Ahab with Nolens Volens at Kilby Court or Levee Town at the Sun & Moon Cafe.
