Lounge Act Weekend: That's right, the New Year starts now!

Need a handy, dandy guide to the long weekend, including New Year's Eve options galore? We got ya covered.---
Thursday night (aka New Year's Eve Eve), there are several worthy outings that we'll consider warm-ups for Friday's big night out. Bar Deluxe hosts a free gig by Andy Frasco and the UN with Marinade, the Eric McFadden Trio brings its funky showmanship and killer guitar to the Hog Wallow (read Jeremy Asay's interview with McFadden right here), Holy Water Buffalo hosts another CD release party at Kilby Court, and the Utah Symphony is playing along to the BBC's Blue Planet film live at Abravanel Hall.
Pretty cool stuff, right? But Thursday's options are a mere fraction of the insane number of outings available for New Year's Eve on Friday. It's impossible to recap all of them here, so I recommend taking a look at our full list of Dec. 31 doings right here.
I will, however, point out a few that seem particularly appealing to me. Let's face it, New Year's Eve is amateur night out for the most part, which is why I tend to stick to house parties instead of braving the bars. But there are a few fun shows that might lure me out on the town.
The Carlos Cornia gig at ABG's is clearly the highlight for anyone stuck in Provo for New Year's Eve; their reggae sound should make you forget how cold it is outside (and what town you're in). The End of the Decade Hoorah Rah at Salt Lake Recording Studio with Marinade and the Samuel Smith Band is a BYOB rager that will be manna for blues-rock fans. The Jewel and James McMurtry shows are sold out, but you can check out Royal Bliss at the Huka Bar, Long Distance Operator at Bar Deluxe, Thunderfist at Burt's Tiki Lounge or the Ted Dancin' dance party at The Urban Lounge as long as you get to those respective joints early enough in the evening. And of course, we can't forget the bevy of activities at EVE in downtown Salt Lake City.
Come Saturday, when you're in full recovery mode, consider the I Am the Ocean/Muscle Hawk gig at Kilby Court, or the Hangover Show at Club Vegas, featuring Riksha and A Balance of Power among its featured acts.
And Sunday? What, you want to party some more? Relax! Stay at home! Hit the couch with a remote and some leftover bubbly and chill the hell out, will ya?
