I might add that Civil Unions were an acceptable alternative, to many in teh gay community that is/was until the extreme right refused to confer the same rights that are provided along with the term "marriage". Example, the original draft wording for Prop 8 in California also acted to remove Civil Unions from the California Constitution, wording which was removed from the final draft in order to get Prop 8 on the ballot.
