It’s a balancing act between taxpayers’ burden and public safety, as the Salt Lake County discusses funding for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office during council meetings Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon recently proposed a 17.5 percent property tax hike for county residents to cover expenses such as overdue maintenance projects. The dollars-and-cents battle continues Tuesday, as the county discusses the budget needs of the Salt Lake County sheriff’s office.
Among other discussion items, the Sheriff’s office is looking for a hiring-freeze exception to hire a jail nurse. Other issues will be discussed, and the Salt Lake County auditor’s office will also be seeking a $24,835 appropriation. The hiring question, along with other budget issues affecting county offices, will be discussed in a meeting starting at 9:30 a.m. In the afternoon, the County Council formally will begin and offer the public to chance to weigh in on the budget matters and other county issues.
