The University of Utah received top ranking along with 24 other campuses across the country in the recently issued listing of LGBT-friendly campuses, by the Campus Pride Index.
Through a partnership with the Huffpost Gay Voices, Campus Pride Index released its listing of 339 colleges and universities across the country ranked by friendliness to LGBT students based on inclusion, health, safety, non-discrimination policies and other factors. The top ranking for LGBT-friendly campuses was a 5 ranking for the index’s metrics of inclusion, and the University of Utah earned that distinction with 24 other campuses across the country.
For Kai Martinez, director of the U’s LGBT Resource Center, the honor is well deserved. “This University really works to diversify on many levels. That [ranking] is in reference to our policies of nondiscrimination, domestic-partner benefits, the response of campus security and police to issues of bias,” Martinez says of some of the major factors. “It’s a great thing and it’s a place where we’ve worked hard to get to.”
