Music at the Market full calendar announced

When I was preparing for a guest spot on Radio West at the beginning of the year to talk about my favorite local albums and local music trends (listen to a podcast here), I realized that I first heard two of my now-favorite local bands The Folka Dots and Matteo at the Downtown Farmers Market -- and subsequently wrote a feature on them because of it. Since that early gig in their respective careers, they’ve gone on to play much larger stages, sometimes opening for prominent bands.
There are a number of similar examples on the food side of the market, like Laura’s Buffalo Chips, Happy Monkey Hummus, etc., that have started selling their delicious goods at the market and have since opened up doors at bigger retailers like Whole Foods and Harmon’s. I can’t help but think that that little trailer stage for Music at the Market acts as a step up as bands grow.
As such, there might be some bands that you’ve never heard of who are playing on the south lawn of Pioneer Park for Music at the Market at 11 a.m. each week this year. The Downtown Farmers Market is open Saturday mornings from 8 a.m.– 1 p.m. through October 27.
“The consistent growth of the region’s local music scene has enabled us to bring current and fresh, local bands to our music stage every season,” says Kristin Beck, program coordinator for Downtown Farmers Market in a press release. “I’m especially proud of this season’s music schedule and I hope that visitors to the Market discover something new that they may not have seen or heard before.”
I’m personally excited to finally check out Pour Horse, Gary Stoddard and the Usual Suspects, and see bands like The Mighty Sequoyah and Lady Murasaki again. And then I’ll be sure to check out local stalwarts Holy Water Buffalo and The Suicycles.
Unfortunately, the full list just came out this week, so if you missed The 321s, Staks O'Lee, Bullets & Belles, Folk Hogan or Hope & Tim Glenn since the market opened this season, they are all acts worth some of your attention eventually.
