Help send Matteo off to their artist-in-residence at Sichuan University this Thursday for their last Stateside performance for a while.---

Thanks mainly to a YouTube video of the band covering The Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” landing on Spin’s weekly blog “This Week’s 9 Controversial, Baffling, and Excellent Covers” on April 27, the quartet has met their Kickstarter goal of $6,000 -- with one-third of that raised in the two days following the post.

The video was posted as a thank you to the people who had already donated, bandleader Eric Chipman says.

“I didn’t really think much of it when we posted, and it’s kind of mind-boggling how it just sort of went viral,” he adds. The YouTube video currently has more than 20,000 views and is posted on a smattering of national music blogs. “I think it just goes to show that people are interested in the concept of [a Chinese-American folk music hybrid], even though the video wasn’t super-high quality. It will be interesting to see how it works out when we put it out.”

So, as a farewell show before their trans-Pacific voyage, Matteo will perform a free show ($5-15 donations welcome) at 1319 Roxbury Road, Thursday, May 3 at 7 p.m. (More information here) Multi-instrumentalist Jordan Riley will also be serving up Chinese shaved ice (chua bing) for the occassion.

Matteo is still accepting funding on Kickstarter, and you can pitch in here.

The band has agreed to send City Weekly "Tour Diary" entries from abroad, so check back to stay current on this Chinese project.
