Headbanging to Rock & (Law?)

by Austen Diamond
- Posted // 2012-03-23 - “There’s a sucker born every minute,” P. T. Bamum said. Don’t be one. Let Utah Lawyers for the Arts drop some knowledge on you about music and the law this Saturday.

It’s a rough world out there for musicians (and artists, in general). And ULA is here to help them navigate the murky waters with the second year of the free Art and the Law lectures/discussions.

On Saturday, March 24 (1-4 p.m.), Thomas Leavens (Esq. of Leavens, Strand, Glover & Adler, LLC) will present Music and the Law, which will delve into rights protection and understanding industry practices and terms (you know, that Latin-like lawyer speak that’s as complicated as the solo in “Crazy Train”). That includes the ways and means of publishing, how to negotiate myriad contracts and agreements and a little something some tie-wearing folks call “business models.” Bad things happen to good people -- remember the lawsuit against “Barbie Girl”? Catastrophe! Yep, it's heady stuff broken down simply for musicians of all colors. And it should be of interest to folks who want to get into the music biz in some other capacity, as well.

The series will continue with Publishing on April 14 and Documentaries on May 26. To learn more about these workshops, go here.
