Local crooner's song lands on national television tonight

by Austen Diamond
Posted // 2011-09-06 - Provo-based singer-songwriter Joshua James will have a song featured on the season premiere of Sons of Anarchy tonight.

The show is an interesting divergence from the typically crime family drama—the protagonists just happen to be a motorcycle gang. The show, now in its fourth season, will air on FX at 10 p.m. tonight, Sept. 6, and it will begin with “Coal War.”

“Coal War”—the intro track to James’ Build Me This—starts off with James’ soft and raspy voice chanting “Ain’t cuttin’ my hair til the good Lord comes” in a gospel-y sort of way. It builds and hits its roots-rock climax at just after the four-minute mark. The entire five-minute track will be played as the cinematic opening song.

James has opened for the likes of Ani DiFranco, and when he’s not touring, he co-runs Northplatte Records, the musical home of Desert Noises, The Vibrant Sound, Parlor Hawk and more. James recently put the finishing touches on his third record—no release date has been announced—and he is gearing up for a national tour. He will make a Salt Lake City pit stop at The State Room on November 3.
