Salt Lake City’s Wasatch Roller Derby traveled to California over the weekend to play against two SoCal leagues and up their ranking with the Women’s Flat-Track Derby Association. WRD’s Blind Dog recaps the bouts: ---

The first two minutes of Wasatch Roller Derby’s weekend in California started out slowly, with the Silicon Valley Roller Girls taking an early 2-0 lead. But Midnight Terror jammer Harry Slaughter posted 20 points in the second jam, sparking a scoring extravaganza that would carry WRD’s Midnight Terror through two large-spread victories. Wasatch, who were ranked 15th in WFTDA’s Western Region after the first quarter of 2012, entered the weekend hoping for a final surge before the 2nd-quarter rankings are finalized at the end of this month.

All eyes in the Western Region have been focused on Wasatch since they eked out a 5-point victory against 8th ranked Angel City of Los Angeles last month. Wasatch needed defining victories against 12th ranked Silicon Valley and 17th ranked Santa Cruz to prove that last month’s performance wasn’t a fluke. Wasatch proved their mettle, posting a 261-70 victory over Silicon Valley on Saturday night. Selection of a game MVP proved difficult, with solid showings from MT’s full roster of blockers and jammers, but Alie Kitten skated away with the victor’s trophy, a well-deserved PBR tank-top.

Sunday morning also started slowly, with Santa Cruz holding a 7-2 lead after the first 6 jams. Moonraker ripped the game wide open with 19 points in the seventh jam. Midnight Terror finished the first half with a 98-25 lead. Santa Cruz battled to the final whistle, but Wasatch closed their weekend victoriously, with a healthy 158-69 lead. With two more victories in the pocket, Wasatch awaits their new ranking, determined by the vote of fellow Western Region teams. A second-quarter ranking in the top 10 of the Western Region would guarantee WRD a spot in the regional playoffs in Oakland, Calif., this fall.
