Now-a-Dollar Dec. 3

by Scott Renshaw
- Posted // 2010-12-03 - The pickings are as slim for new bargain-theater releases as they are for general new releases in the post-Thanksgiving weekend.

The one new option is at least a visually interesting one, though. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole adapts portions of the first three books in Kathryn Lasky's book-series about an owl-populated world facing a battle between good and evil. Plot elements are familiar from plenty of fantasy quest narratives, from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars and Harry Potter, and it may not be easy to embrace the photo-realistic owls as characters. But director Zack Snyder gives the tale tremendous dynamism, even if the bargain-theater setting doesn't permit the 3D presentation.
