Last night, members of the general public fortunate enough to score free passes streamed into a preview screening of Funny People, the new comedy by Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) starring Adam Sandler as a terminally-ill comedian. Those who have seen Apatow's previous films know that the filmmaker is not afraid of polysyllabic profanities and sexual references of every possible type.

So I'm not sure whether to fear for the poor child, or at least take comfort at the modicum of self awareness represented by the following, actual exchange between two people entering the screening: ---

Approximately 8-year-old Girl: "Mommy, what does 'Rated R' mean?"

Mother of Approximately 8-year-old Girl: "We're bad parents."

At the very least, we can take comfort from the fact that the mother in question will now have to answer a lot of questions about fellatio, male and female anatomy, and the roughly 350 uses of a certain four-letter word as verb, noun, gerund, and I think maybe even preposition.
