Free Parking For Everyone ... For Now, Anyway

It seems that in exchange for an insufferable heat wave, Salt Lake City has been granted free parking. According to a press release issued by Mayor Ralph Becker’s office, the parking meters are experiencing “technical issues that have had system-wide impacts.” Therefore, all meter-related parking enforcement has been suspended.

According to the press release, the technical issues came about Friday evening. Since then, technicians have been working to identify and solve the problem. There are suspicions the problems may have been initiated and or exacerbated by the high temperatures over the weekend. In other words, the meters are melting. Temperatures rose to a sweltering 104 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday and remained in the triple digits throughout the rest of the weekend.

"We did discover at least a couple of towers had issues that appeared to be heat-related," said Art Raymond, press director for the Mayor's Office. “Issues with a handful of credit-card readers seem to have been affected by high temperatures, as well.”

While it seems that the machines, too, are suffering from heat exhaustion, Raymond says they were thoroughly vetted because Salt Lake Valley is prone to extended periods of triple-digit temperatures.

Raymond isn’t sure when the parking meters will be fixed and ready to charge, so in the meantime, bask in the delight of free parking. However, know that the city is still enforcing the two-hour limit. So, be sure to keep track of the time and move your car to a different spot.

“We are still hunting for the problem. And we want to take steps to ensure insure that it doesn’t happen again," said Raymond.
