New group seeks to keep polygamy a criminal offense

It's been a number of years since Tapestry Against Polygamy was the lone voice against the ever-rising power of polygamy in Utah, but now a new coalition has appeared that's determined to stop the possibility of plural marriage becoming decriminalized.

Sound Choices Coalition, led by former plural wife Kristyn Decker, put out a press release Tuesday "urging the state of Utah not to decriminalize polygamy in response to the lawsuit by the Kody Brown family." The group seeks to end human-rights violations caused by polygamy.

The Browns, stars of the reality TV show Sister Wives, will be heard by Judge Clark Waddoups on Thursday afternoon regarding the issue of whether Utah's statute rendering polygamy a crime is unconstitutional.

In a statement released by the Browns' lawyer last week, Johnathan Turley stated, "The [Browns] are not seeking public approval of their beliefs or state recognition of their plural relationship. They are asking for what all other citizens of Utah take for granted: the right to maintain their own family and faith without threat of prosecution."

Sound Choices argues that "Patriarchal polygamy violates human rights by placing women in religious bondage," Decker states in the press release. If Utah were to decriminalize polygamy—something that pro-polygamy advocates have sought for years—then, Sound Choices argues, the state will become a haven for polygamous families from across the country.

Sound Choices are asking those sympathetic to their  cause to meet with them Thursday at 3 p.m. in front of the federal courthouse at 350 Main in Salt Lake City.

Christine Marie Katas is a member of the coalition and founder of Voices for Dignity. In a funny blog about her and her plural husbands, she explores some of the absurdities, as she sees it, of the polygamous experience. You can read it here

She wrote a petition that the group is seeking signatures for "against the legalization of the subjugation of women in polygamy." You can find the petition here.

Vicky Prunty, the founder of Tapestry, who currently resides in California, is also expected to join the coalition on Thursday in a show of solidarity.

When he marry's them, then tell them about the other women he is married to. He goes after the weak people. drug attics, mental institution, learning disability , ones who he don't think they can find for them selves. He will break you down until you are left with nothing, that's how he makes you fell. Americans may be interested to know that Canadians went through a similar situation in 2011. Thirteen groups, both pro and con polygamy, presented Briefs to Chief Justice Robert Bauman of British Columbia Suprme Court in Vancouver. Pro-polygamists, including the infamous polygamous cult at Bountiful, wanted the practise decriminalized. The judge took 4 months to make his decision, which he brought down on 23 November, 2011. He ruled that S. 293 CC, proscribing polygamy, IS constitutional because polygamy is an anti-social act that harms all of society. It contravenes the equality rights of women, harms their children psychologically and impoverishes them, and creates a dangerous social situation whereby it sets men against each other in the quest for a wife and family of their own, since Nature has not provided even two women for every one man. Male polygamists therefore rob their brothers. His findings are available on the Internet. Mainstream Canadians breathed a collective sigh of relief. We do not want to see women and girls as concubines in harems, which is what the ancient, misogynistic practice of polygamy is. Canadians believe in the equality of the sexes. After all, the year is 2013 AD, not 2013 BC! Surely mainstream Americans will not accept that women can be reduced once again to their ancient previous low status as mere chattels?

People need to understand\ that polygamy is NOT all “sister wives” and “big love” or the Dargers. The law\ "turns a blind eye" to FLDS polygamy where children (girls as young\ as 12) are married off to older men and then live off of welfare, food stamps\ and Medicaid (known as "bleeding the beast"). . . as discussed in new\ book "plygs", a fact based journalistic view at the world of FLDS polygamy. \ Warren Jeffs, the leader of this group (serving a life sentence for child rape)\ ordered only 15 men in the group can procreate with ANY of the women of their\ choice within the group…predicted an apocalypse, Told followers to build\ backpacks and be ready to go at a moments notice. This after findings of his\ journal about a bed ordered to be specially made for the purpose of sexually\ assaulting young girls were outlined in a diary he called 'priesthood records'. \ He told followers the bed must be made of hardwood, sturdy so it wouldn't\ rattle, long enough to hold his frame and covered with a plastic sheet to\ 'protect the mattress from what will happen on it'. . . . now a lot of the\ families from TX have moved out of the ranch. . . this means that many young\ girls are being moved across state lines or even across the border to Canada\ this is human trafficking for sexual reasons. the government doesn't seem to be\ doing anything. . . this group are nothing but pedophiles and welfare cheats. . . . as for the Browns law suit, I dont understand why because the UT A. G. has refused to prosecute polygamy anyway. . . I think it is nothing more than the need for more publicity . . .
