Park City's Winning Cocktail

I came, I saw, I drank ... many cocktails. Fourteen bartenders representing various Park City restaurants and bars put on their game faces Tuesday night for the Winter 2011 Park City Cocktail Contest. --- The contest was held at the Red Rock Junction in the Redstone Center of Park City. I was among the panel of six judges charged with tasting the cocktails and then scoring them in four categories, based on "ease" (referring to the cocktail's degree of difficulty), originality, taste and appearance.

When all the mixes were muddled and all the shakers shaken, the winning cocktail was The Pommard, created by Cody Childers of Easy Street/Sky Blue. Amazingly, this was actually my favorite cocktail of the evening. The Pommard was made with Calvados, lemon juice, cinnamon-cardamom simply syrup and fresh apple cider, garnished with star anize.

Recipe:

Shake and strain the following into a martini glass, rimmed with cinnamon and sugar: 1.5 oz. Calvados, 1 oz. cinnamon-cardamom simple syrup (see below), 1/2 oz. lemon juice, 1.5 oz. apple cider. Garnish with a star anise.

To make the cinnamon-cardamom syrup: Sift together 2 cups granulated sugar, 3/4 cup ground cinnamon, 3 tbsp. ground cardamom and 1 tbsp. ground cloves and pour into a medium saucepan. Add 2 cups boiling water and stir over medium heat until well mixed. Allow to cool.

The winning cocktail will be featured at Park City restaurants and bars throughout the 2011-12 winter.

Congratulations to Cody, as well as to all of the talented mixologists who participated in the 2011 Park City Cocktail Contest.
