Farming at the Market

Posted // 2011-08-19 - On Saturday, Aug. 20, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) and AgriAdvocates are celebrating agriculture in Utah with the second annual “Farming at the Market” event, at the Downtown Farmers Market in Pioneer Park (300 S. 300 West).

 

Working to educate the public about the importance of self sufficiency and preserving Utah’s farms and ranches, AgiAdvocates has called on several partners to participate in its Farming at the Market event. Occupying the west side of the Center Plaza at Pioneer Park, each organization’s booth will serve to educate visitors on the different facets of agriculture. Experts will share gardening tips, information about food storage and preservation, backyard chicken tips, tastes of local food and produce and educate about the importance of local farms.

Children can participate in the process of threshing wheat, planting a wheat seed into a “necklace” to watch it grow, and meet several small goats, sheep, piglets and rabbits up close at the petting zoo.

“Hosting an event like this presents a great opportunity for Utahns to learn more about our state’s agriculture in a fun way,” said Jed Christenson, director of marketing and development for the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. “Learning about animals, gardening, local produce and products becoming self sufficient are essential for adults and children to fully understand and appreciate the role of farms and ranches in Utah.”

The Farming at the Market event is free, open to the public, and takes place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
