The Swell Season @ Red Butte Gardens

Academy Award winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova's Red Butte Gardens appearance, with back-up musicians on Sunday as The Swell Season, was marred slightly by sound problems and threatening weather. Hansard remarked first on the stifling heat asking "How do you people live here?" and his band- soul-mate Irglova expressed concern that the gusting wind might blow her dress up, causing "indecency." Wind, heat and issues with Hansard's guitar aside, The Swell Season ushered the Red Butte audience through a number of audience-participation tunes and thrilled everyone with songs from the movie "Once," music from the new CD Strict Joy, as well as songs from The Frames and even a couple of covers.

Sporting a new, close-cropped 'do, Irglova and Hansard treated the audience to a superb version of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" and, later in the show, in what seemed to be a spontaneous move, Hansard segued into Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine." Hansard's humor peppered the evening, but what impresssed me most was the power and range of his voice. He hit impossibly high falsetto notes, along with deep bass tones and projected throughout Red Butte even, at times, without a microphone -- a credit, for sure, to the years he spent busking.

Just another superb show and lovely evening, courtesy the folks at Red Butte Garden and Mother Nature.
