The wines of France's Luberon wine region are often very good values, especially when compared to Bordeaux and Burgundy. During a recent dinner at Faustina, I discovered one such value.
The wine is M. Chapoutier "La Ciboise" Rouge ( $14.99). It's a fruity blend of Grenache and Syrah, a fairly light, easy-drinking red wine that nicely enhanced Faustinal's petite Oscar filet mignon I was eating, rather than overpowering it.
Michel Chapoutier is one of France's most respected winemakers, combining traditional and modern methods of wine production, along with his dedication to biodynamic wines. While I love his Crozes-Hermitage, Cote-Rotie, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Gigondas offerings, many of those are beyond my budget. But, for fifteen bucks, his La Ciboise line - named for his grandfather's home in the town of Tain l'Hermitage - is a great French bang-for-the-buck. It will straddle a wide range of foods, from pizza and pasta with red sauce, to burgers or sausages from the grill.
