On this first day of the New Year, the last thing you're probably thinking about drinking is bubbly. But, maybe you should. Because now that the holidays and New Year's Eve celebrations are over, it's the time that many wine sellers are discounting and moving out their overstock of sparkling wines.
One terrific value -- a bottle of bubbly form Italy's premier Champagne-style winemakers -- is Ferrari Perle ($35). This is a blanc de blancs sparkling wine, meaning it is made solely from Chardonnay grapes. And, it rivals excellent blanc de blancs that I've had from France's Champagne region.
Ferrari, Italy's leading sparkling-wine producer, has been making wine since 1902, crafted in the style of French Champagne, from grapes grown in vineyards on the Alpine slopes of Trento D.O.C.
Ferrari Perle is pale golden in color, with an intense, yeasty bouquet. Typical of blanc de blancs, Perle is brimming with brioche, apple and toast flavors, plus hints of almond. It's a crisp, elegant bottle of bubbly that would be perfect to pop on the first day of the year, or any other.
