Wine Wednesday: Versatile Spanish Red

by Ted Scheffler
- Posted // 2013-12-18 - Orin Swift's newest wine line is called Locations. These are wines that are made to represent the best grape varieties of the wine regions they represent, at very affordable prices, be it in Italy, France, Spain or wherever.

I would never say "no" to an Orin Swift wine. And, with the holidays in mind, I heartily recommend Locations E-2 ($17.99), from Spain. The 'E' in 'E-2' is for España, of course.

Although it's a little intense, this wine is a well-balanced, wildly versatile, and approachable red wine that will accompany a vast array of holiday foods with aplomb.

Locations E-2 is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Monastrell and Cariñena. Despite its easy appeal, watch out for E-2's 14.5% alcohol by volume. It can creep up on you...

Dark cherry, spice and floral notes dominate the nose. On the palate, the wine is silky, with lively acidity, plum and mocha. I found this youthful red to be a knockout with Marcella Hazan’s roasted lemon chicken. But, I wouldn't hesitate to drink it with a Christmas turkey or ham, either. Enjoy.
