Who are the poets to watch? Imagine the poetic power of 50 fresh literary lollipops written by emerging writers and bound between two covers. Virginia-based Meridian takes nominations and submissions from the nation’s best literary magazines and writing programs as well as more than 2,000 individual online submissions and boils them down to an annual potently portable anthology. From subtle to just plain weird, Best New Poets features vital voices in the medium today.

Poems, when read silently, fluctuate in their gravity and depth depending on the reader. But, when cadenced in the writer’s voice, they can pierce like an arrow. Tonight, four anthology-featured poets (two of them local) will read their work: University of Utah doctoral students Lisa Fay Coutley (winner of the Fall 2009 Black River Chapbook Competition) and Dawn Lonsinger, managing editor of Western Humanities Review. Seattle-based poets Luke Johnson and Matthew Kelsey will join them.
