Barnard Was a Friend to Animals

PETA joins everyone working for social justice across the country in mourning the loss of civil rights attorney Brian Barnard of the Utah Legal Clinic. As an advocate for anyone without a voice in our legal system, Barnard strove to protect everyone’s rights—including the rights of animals, of whom he was both a friend and defender. Over the years, Barnard helped PETA secure our right to speak out about the discrimination and abuse often imposed upon animals. One such victory upheld our right to distribute leaflets at schools. With Barnard’s support, PETA also won the right to protest the injuries inflicted on animals in a rodeo held during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. There could be no better way to remember Brian Barnard than by working toward a fairer society for all, human and nonhuman alike.
