This week offers quite the bounty of events for making your corner of the world a better place. Start with a meetand-greet event with Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank and Fire Chief Kurt Cook, who will field questions on emergency services in the city. Then learn about starting a community garden in your own neighborhood, and later drop in on an informational session held by Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon on how to enroll in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Ask the Chiefs Session
Thursday, Jan. 21
The police and fire chiefs will be touring the city to hear concerns from the public, visiting a different city library each week. This is your time to engage your public-safety leaders about issues that may be affecting you, be they drugs, burglaries, fires or response times to kitten-in-tree incidents.
Day-Riverside Library, 1575 W. 1000 North, Jan. 21, 7 p.m., 801-799-3366. For information or to submit questions, e-mail askthechiefs@slcgov.com.

Starting a Community Garden
Saturday, Jan. 23
The community that grows together stays together—or, at least has plenty of fresh produce. If you’ve ever been curious about how to start a community garden in your neighborhood or at your child’s school, you won’t want to miss this info session by the folks at the Wasatch Community Gardens. Sowing the seeds for a green revolution in your school or neighborhood shouldn’t wait until spring.
Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, 4th floor conference room, Jan. 23, 10 a.m., 801-359-2658, WasatchGardens.org

Salt Lake County Mayor Corroon’s CHIP/Medicaid Information
Saturday, Jan. 23
While the country struggles to pin down health-care reform, Corroon wants to remind low-income families that there are still options for getting help through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Come to this forum and find out if you and your family could qualify for health-care assistance.
