Best & Worst TV 2011

Tops & tanks of the year

By Bill Frost
POSTED // Dec 29,2011 - Breaking Bad (AMC) Easy. Wannabe meth kingpin Walt (Bryan Cranston) took a back seat to the rest of Breaking Bad’s players for most of Season 4—in particular, letting soul-adrift partner Jesse (Aaron Paul) and vengeful badass Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) gun the car into white-knuckle oblivion. The final face-off (ha!) didn’t take everyone out, but it sets up what should be both an explosive and implosive last run in 2012.

ICYMI TV

POSTED // Dec 1,2011 - Nine episodes in, Revenge has evolved from what initially looked like a weak Hamptons mashup of The Count of Monte Cristo, Gossip Girl and a Neiman Marcus catalog into a surprisingly smart (but still juicy)

Leverage, The Walking Dead

Plus: Bored to Death, The Soup

By Bill Frost
POSTED // Nov 25,2011 - I’ve been onboard with grifters-go-Robin-Hood action series Leverage since it debuted in 2008; it walks the comedy/drama line expertly, and the cast (led by film vet Timothy Hutton)

6 Shows, 6 to Go

These characters are unwelcome

By Bill Frost
POSTED // Nov 17,2011 - Any TV show can be made better by removing an annoying/useless character or two (or, in the case of Fox’s Terra Nova, all of ’em but the dinosaurs).

Metal Evolution

Plus: Megadeth, That Metal Show

By Bill Frost
POSTED // Nov 10,2011 - There have been more docs about heavy metal than there are subgenres of heavy metal—of which, according to Banger Films’ new 11-part series Metal Evolution, there are 26.

Hell on Wheels

Plus: The Heart, She Holler

By Bill Frost
POSTED // Nov 3,2011 - No, AMC’s new western Hell on Wheels is not the second coming of HBO’s Deadwood; basic cable doesn’t allow that much profanity (admit it: The gratuitous cussin’ is what you remember most fondly).

True TV

Beavis & Butt-head, Grimm

Plus: Allen Gregory, Rock Center

By Bill Frost
POSTED // Oct 27,2011 - The new Beavis & Butt-head will be just like its original 1993-97 incarnation—and not at all. Back then, B&B just pissed on music videos between moronic misadventures
