Despite—or rather, because of—Lucinda Scala Quinn’s reputation as big-wig contributor to the Martha Stewart empire (she is the vice president and editorial director of food and entertainment for Martha Stewart Omnimedia), her new cookbook Mad Hungry has gained plenty of commercial success, melding equal parts recipes, musings on family importance and autobiographical excerpts. Appearing regularly on NBC’s Today and Martha as well as co-hosting PBS’s Everyday Food, she has a career that is immersed in the art of food preparation.
Cooking for a family of four brothers, three sons and a husband—all of whom love to eat heartily and stereotypically disregard any notion of healthy discretion in their diet—has not been easy. Her brawny family has been the inspiration for Mad Hungry, as her recipes are arranged in a manner that makes them easy and cheap to prepare but also incorporate healthier ingredients as a means to fortify a picky-eater’s nutritional lifestyle.
