If the purr of a well-tuned bike gets you hot under the hoodie, the Bike Porn tour may be for you. Ordained minister, filmmaker and bike activist Reverend Phil Sano has dedicated many years to orchestrating bicycle-inspired events around Portland, Ore. He’s now taking his show on the road screening erotic films that celebrate a love for bikes while pushing the envelope of eroticism, obscenity and downright weirdness. Bike Porn 3: Cycle Bound Chain Whip Tour (BikePornTour.blogspot.com), takes place Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1401 S. Main, at 9 p.m.
Why would a minister organize a pornography festival?
The nature of ministry is to preach about things people may have forgotten. One of the important lessons we seem to forget is, “What really makes us happy?” People enjoying their lives and feeling free to express themselves and being able to get around safely—that’s what makes people happy, and sexual intolerance makes people sad.
What is so sexual about a bicycle?
I know why I think they’re sexy as hell. Sexuality and freedom have a lot to do with each other. When you’re riding your bike and you feel free. You don’t feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. In sex, the same things are true. But lots of different filmmakers have different reasons for submitting and those become obvious by watching the films.
What can audiences expect from the festival?
They’ll probably be a little shocked. A variety of different ideas are presented and some of them may very well be offensive to people, but in exploring what is obscene versus what is erotic, we hope to find what the nature of obscenity is. If you don’t define what obscenity is, then you are, de facto, allowing others to define it for you and that’s when we get into all sorts of trouble.
Have you received opposition in more conservative communities?
Sure, one of the biggest problems we face is people denying us venues. Idaho has been a tough place. We may not be able to do it there.
How does Salt Lake City compare to other places the tour has visited?
Salt Lake has been, consistently, the best place for bike porn. The community and reaction is so positive and really encouraging. So, that’s been pretty stunning.
