Always the supporting cast member, never the star. Such is actor/comedian Tommy Davidson’s life.

Though his skills as a multi-talented performer cannot be denied, Hollywood’s spotlight seems to elude him. As a cast member of the groundbreaking TV sketch comedy series In Living Color, he created unforgettable characters like “Sweet Tooth Jones” and parodied MC Hammer and Michael Jackson. But though he paid his dues, he didn’t get the same starring roles that came to fellow cast members Damon Wayans and Jim Carrey. He did, however, appear alongside plenty of A-listers in various movies and TV shows following ILC.

Davidson’s stand-up career has been more successful. He’s had three Showtime comedy specials and recently appeared in the documentary I Am Comic, about the art and occupational hazards of stand-up comedy, alongside the likes of Sarah Silverman, Kathy Griffin and Louis CK. The bottom line: You’ll pay a little bit of money for a whole lot of underappreciated talent, energy and comedy. Consider it money well spent.
